Late last night, I got my chance to watch part 2 of the series 8 finale of Doctor Who, entitled: “Death in Heaven”. Below will be a description of both parts to the finale. So needless to say, if you have not seen both parts, and do not want it spoiled, do not read any further.
“Dark Water/Death in Heaven” Writtem by Setven Moffat, Directed by: Rachel Talalay
Staring: Peter Capaldi as The Doctor
and
Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald
We begin with Clara talking on her mobile with her boyfriend and coworker, Danny Pink (Played by Samuel Anderson). She is going to admit to him that she loves him and that she has been traveling with the Doctor. Danny is tragically killed when he is hit by a car during this conversation. After this, Clara calls the Doctor to try and get him to go back in time and save Danny. Clara manages to get the Doctor to go to the one place a TARDIS key can be destroyed, a volcano.
Clara stats threatening to throw the keys into the lava if he refuses to go save Danny. She throws all seven TARDIS keys in, it is then revealed that it was a trick and that they were never at the volcano at all. Clara was only in a dream-like state. The Doctor was just seeing how far Clara was willing to go.
The Doctor took Clara to the place Danny supposedly was, a strange mausoleum that had skeletons inside big tanks of a liquid. It is here that they meet Missy, (Michelle Gomez) She offers the ‘welcome package’ to the The Doctor and kisses him on the lips, Clara polity refused the package from Missy. They are informed that the place they are at is called 3W, for the three words frequently heard in broadcasts from their clients, “Don’t cremate me”.
While at 3W, it is explained the skeletons are not sitting in ordinary water, it is a special liquid to make all inorganic matter transparent. It is a substance called: Dark Water. This is demonstrated by the fact the when someone put the sleeved hand in, the part of his arm that was in the water looked bare, despite the fact that they were wearing a long sleeved shirt.
Meanwhile, Danny wakes up in what is basically explained to him as the afterlife. He is told that he still has a connection to his body. He also meets a young boy up in “Heaven”. Danny accidentally killed this boy in a war, it likely could be the key reason that Danny stopped being a solider. After this, Danny is told that he has a call from the other side (i.e. the world of the living). It is Clara, but she being skeptical and Danny not being able to provide her proof that it really is Danny hangs up on him, devastating him. Danny is offered to chance to turn off his emotions.
After this Missy gives the orders for the tanks to begin to drain. The skeletons stand and press a button to make the tanks drain. As the tanks drain, we see water the dark water was hiding, the Cybermen.
It is revealed that this place had a Galilfreyan Matrix Data Slice, which held the minds of the deceased from unknown length of time, (my personal theory is that it goes back far enough to catch the Ponds, if not further). It is at this point The Doctor discovers that Missy is a Time Lady. Missy tells him that she is the one he left behind. She reveals that her name is “Missy”, because she couldn’t keep calling herself……..The Master
(end of part one)
Death in Heaven
With the dead returning to their now Cyberman bodies, the world has gone into panic. The Cybermen and Missy are confronted by Kate Stewart, the Chief Scientific Officer of UNIT, and a good friend of The Doctor’s. Kate’s team takes Missy and The Doctor to a sky ship. Missy is locked up and guarded, while the Doctor is taken to a war room. The Doctor gets upset when he overhears that the president is on board, upset with the uselessness of Americans, particularly over how they prey about everything. The Doctor is corrected in the fact that the circumstances of called for the Earth to unite in one government to stop the threat. The Doctor mentions about how it is always an idiot that gets elected to be president.
Elsewhere, Cyber Danny has rescued Clara for Cybermen, and he is asking Clara to turn his emotions off, which would make him a full Cyberman. Against The Doctor’s wishes, Claa did this anyway with the sonic screwdriver. This also allowed The Doctor to learn the full extent of the plan. AT this point, Clara is now hugging Cyber Danny, who is doing nothing but standing there. Missy floats in with her umbrella, matching what the fans called her before, an “evil Marry Poppins” Missy reveals that she has a bracelet that allows her to control the zombie Cybermen. All but one of the zombie Cybermen follow the orders Missy gives, which were the traditional instructions given by airline attendants. The only one not doing so is, you guessed it Danny.
Missy then puts the bracelet on The Doctor’s wrist, claiming it to be a “birthday gift”. The Doctor says that he does not want an army. He also says that he is not a good man, nor a bad man, he also says that he is not a hero, nor a president, or an officer, he is an idiot. He gives the Bracelet to Danny, who controls the zombie Cybermen, sacrificing himself and the other zombie Cybermen to save the day.
After being defeated, Missy informs the Doctor that Gallifrey is back at its original coordinates. Clara attempts to get rid of Missy, but it beaten to it by a lone Cyberman. While we did not see her regenerate, we all know that this is not the last we will see of The Master/Missy.
Kate is now found nearby in the graveyard. The Doctor is surprised to see that she is still alive, because the fell out of the plane. The Doctor looked back at the Cyberman, and realized that there was only one person that Cyberman could be. Someone who was too strong to allow an alien to control him, Kate’s father and a companion to the Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. The Doctor saluted the Brigadier, as he had always wished for and he flew off.
Two weeks later, a portal to the Nethersphere opens in Clara’s place. Danny’s voice informs her that there is only enough power for a one way trip, for one person. In his place, Danny sent the boy he accidentally killed in the war, asking Clara to find his family.
The Doctor and Clara meet at a restaurant. The Doctor sees the bracelet on Clara’s wrist and assumed Danny was back. He tells Clara that Gallifrey is back where Missy claimed, however it is shown to the viewers that in fact, Missy was lying.
Theories:
I have two theories that might be answered in the Christmas Special here in a few weeks:
1. Orson Pink.
We have seen earlier in this season that there is a man from an unknown point in the future named Orson Pink. Danny left Clara with a little boy to find the parents of. I believe that either this kid, or maybe a child Clara could be conceiving will be Orson Pink.
2. Gallifrey’s return
Part way though the credits, we cut back to the TARDIS and there is a knocking on the door. The voice says that it can’t end like this, with neither The Doctor, nor Clara being OK, and that they are coming in. The voice belongs to Santa, (portrayed by Nick Frost) and asking The Doctor what he wants for Christmas. I believe that Santa could bring back Gallifrey for the holiday, and what a great Christmas gift would that be for The Doctor.
I claim no ownership to anything in this, except my theories. The images acquired via Google image search. Doctor Who created by Sydney Newman.
